Roman Pottery Site
Excavations Summer/Autumn 2002
Excavation of the remaining kilns began. There were some surprises with multi-chambered structures, they all appeared to be late Roman.
This kiln has two thin-walled firing chambers, one behind the other.
A very complex kiln with at least three chambers - probably rebuilt on several occasions.
The conventional thick-walled clay firing chamber.
Pottery from the 'failed' last firing is still in the chamber.
Finds from a ditch filling include glass, part of a shale bracelet, a pottery kiln 'spacer' and pottery.
Not everything on the site is Roman. Late Iron Age pottery found in a ditch.
