Phase 11 Fields N, T and Z January 2002 - December 2002
Map of 2002 season's work

2002 was a very demanding year with an enormous area to excavate including the 'Roman Site' at the end of the peninsula. Preliminary test pits dug over the winter confirmed the presence of very large quantities of pottery.

Excavation work started in field T in March. The usual charcoal pits and ditches were abundant; one of the ditches proved to be of Early Bronze Age date with Beaker pottery and flint working debris in situ.

Two Roman graves dating to the 3rd to 4th centuries were of particular interest. They were bounded by curious little ditches although the bodies had long rotted away, body stains were visible on the bases of the graves. Coffin nails were present as were dozens of hobnails from boots which had been put in to the graves.

Continuing the burial theme, two cremations were found in field N. The first, unfortunately, had been severely damaged by ploughing. The second however was intact in a pit. Strangely the pot appears to have been broken as it was deposited.

The extensive work on the Roman site can be viewed on the Roman Site Pages.
